Josie Warshaw
Ceramicist
I’m a London based artist who has been making ceramic work in my studio at Kingsgate Workshops Trust in Kilburn, London NW6 since 1983.
My ceramic work references personal experiences, thoughts, and observations, often blending seriousness with a lighter infusion of comicality.
The hand-built figurative work is made with thinly rolled clay sheets or is pinched and coiled using a white grogged clay fired to 1115c. Initially fired in an electric kiln some of my work is later sawdust or raku fired.
I intermittently take a rest from the observational work by coiling and decorating bowls or making lidded "white stuff."
More recently I have become interested in slip decorating and scraffitto techniques and am presently creating new work that is illustrative.
Over the years I have combined my studio practice with teaching ceramics at Camberwell School of Art, Camden Arts Centre and the Architectural Association. Presently I teach ceramics part-time at the City Lit in Covent Garden and in my studio. I wrote, “The Complete Practical Potter” in 2000. This book is still available to buy and is useful for beginners to clay who can’t access someone to guide them through the processes.

I have been fortunate to have sold in England and overseas to both private and public collections.
